About Michelle Schiavi

Michelle is from a small coastal town with no high rises, one main road, and few traffic lights: two rivers and a long beach.
In town, the pavement is made of red and black bricks, patterned diagonal white lines. It is a strong Maori pattern. Teenagers ride bareback past the sign on the main street. ‘Do not ride your horses in the main street.’ The lamp posts are black cast iron, like a world not from another time but another place. Nestled in the Bay of Plenty, everything grows. The ocean is interwoven into life. Michelle shows the juxtaposition of structure and freedom in her work. Opotiki.
